From Lisboa with Love

Beautiful Lisboa the great cosmopolitan center of Portugal.
Lovely architecture, beautiful sand on the beaches, lovely castle ruins and new-ish castles, and easy to get around.
Was fun and would love to come again!

First day...

**********

Walking to the beach!
Nearby our hotel.
Our favorite catch-all/grocery store: Lidl!

Our mission: a walk to the beach.

Beach found!
Praia de Santo Amaro.

Enjoying the rocky portion of the beach...
Combing!

A break from the hot, enjoying the AC.
Gathering at a nearby McDonald's.

***

Back at the beach, we met up with another family with a teen.
We had a lovely time together.

Lovely conversation, pizza, origami, & art together!

Plus a short walk on the sand.

***

Walking back to the hotel.

Found a Magnolia tree!

Twinsies.

***

We aren't much for eating dinner out.
So dinner in house it is.
Luckily, Lidl happened to carry a cooktop and a cook pan.
I like the store a lot because it carries a lot of random stuff and since the hotel room didn't even come with a microwave or any sort of kitchen amenities, finding the cooking gear was a great cost savings and comfort.

Soup!
A Portuguese favorite.

Bacalau com battatas.
This is one of my favorite dishes.

From our walk along the beach.
Littlest Miss found beach combing treasures.

The cooktop was set up near a window.

A trip into town: Lisboa.
Lunchtime came complete with a seagull.

Avenida da Liberdade.

***

Originally a train station.
Rossio station, a sculputure of D. Sebastião,
~from Wikipedia~
"Sebastian I is often referred to as the Desired (Portuguese: o Desejado) or the Hidden (o Encoberto), as the Portuguese people longed for his return to end the decline of Portugal that began after his death. He is considered to be the Portuguese example of the King asleep in mountain legend as Portuguese tradition states his return, in a foggy dawn, in Portugal's greatest hour of need."

Just inside the train station: Starbucks!
Embracing my inner tourist.

Our mission to make it to the top of a local hill to visit the local castle:
 Castelo de São Jorge

 On the way:
An open-air escalator.

Houses seen, on the escalator line.
Beautiful tile exteriors.

See on our walk: potentially a old bathhouse location

Castelo de São Jorge.
We made it to the castle grounds!

Too crowded, so my crew decided, this was the best photo, before we left.

***

We made it back to the hotel for dinner!

*********

dow

Down day for the kids.
(gaming day)

***

Made the kids take a walk to the Parque dos Poetas.

***

On our way from the Parque to the beach!
Praia de Paço de Arcos.

The beach.

 The boardwalk.

Our walk took us all the way to next beach over:
Praia de Santo Amaro.

***

The long walk meant that the girls really wanted to cool off with some AC.
Back to McDonalds for us.
I love their sopa de legumes.

Back to Praia de Santo Amaro.

***

Miss, making a sand snail.

***

***

Was happily building a sand crab on the beach.

It was the only crab that I got to have while in Lisbon, this time.

 ***

So glad the I got a bunch of before photos.
I figured that it would probably not last long..
And if fell apart due to some wind, and a pretty deep undercut that I made under the crab's belly.

***

Our walk back to the hotel.

Parque dos Poetas.

***

Back at the hotel.
Night crawler.

********

Medium winds...
And my hat had sustained some tears.
Thankfully the hotel had some repair kits.

***

Having a down day.
(Gaming? Anyone?)
But first breakfast.

***

A walk to the local mall.

A candy hunt at a local mall yields some yums.

********

A trip to Sintra.
Castle Country!

***
Our main stop:
Castelo dos Mouros!

Lunch!

*******

Back in Lisboa.
Just the 3 of us, while Erik and and mid-sis have a relaxing hang.
Shopping & back at Starbucks (it was a warm day).

***

Relaxing around our hotel room.

First, a game of Magic between me and sis.
I put up a good fight.
But ultimately, I lost.

***

Then dinner.
Been eyeing these lovelies in the super market.
Yes, they do cook up amazing.

 Dinner:
carrot soup, tortellini of two kinds, and fejão verde.

***

A storm of origami during this trip.

***

Also, temporary ink tattoos.

Crazy ink tattoos transferred just like black henna does.
Also they darkened over time, just like henna also does.
